God Working . . .
One of the realities of the Christian life is the realization that God is always at work. It may be hard for us to see this truth in action in our "normal, everyday" life. It makes me wonder if there is truly such a thing as "normal, everyday life" in God's economy?
For instance, today was the funeral service for former President George H. W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States. At the age of 20 years old, Bush was shot down in his fighter plane during World War 2. He was over the pacific and had concluded a bombing raid on Japan. His plane was shot down over the Pacific, he ejected and found himself in a life raft clinging to life. He prayed, he said, that he would be rescued by Allies and not the Japanese. He was rescued by US Navy. Over the years he wondered "Why was my life spared?" Of course he would later go on to serve his county in so many ways, culminating in 8 years as VP under President Reagan, and then a 4 year term as President from 1988 - 1992. Also, he would father George W. Bush, the 43 rd President.
Was the fact that he was rescued and lived a "coincidence"? Or could one see that God was working and carrying out His plan? Oh I believe that God was indeed at work that day in the Pacific Ocean, just as He is at work in my life and yours.
No life is purposeless. Each life is uniquely created by God and for God, and we are to live that life (that gift) for His glory. That we can know the Lord our God, that we can be in a real love relationship with Him through the work of His Son, Jesus Christ, is a gift of grace. "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath ordained that we should walk in them." (Eph. 2:10)
My prayer and longing is that I will have spiritual sensitivity to see where God is at work, and respond to His invitation to join Him; that I might experience Him in fullness, and know the joy that is unspeakable.
Even when I cannot see His hand working, I trust Him that He is indeed active and working in and around me. May I be obedient and follow Him in the ways He has called me and let Him do His work. To Him alone be the glory.
